Company overview

Who we are, and what we actually do

Emma Thinking is a matchmaking company based in Colombo, working with Sri Lankans here and with the far larger number living in Australia, the UK, Canada and the Gulf. We are not a dating app and we do not sell swipes. A counsellor talks to you, understands what you are looking for, and then brings you a small number of people we believe genuinely fit — with the reasoning attached.

You will notice our members write to us as though Emma were a person. She is not: Emma is the name of the service, and behind it is a team of qualified counsellors who each carry a handful of members at a time. We would rather say that plainly here than let anyone believe they have been talking to one woman all along.

Everything else follows from a single decision — that the work of finding someone should not be automated. Profiles are verified against identity documents by a person. Introductions are chosen by a person. When something goes wrong, a person calls you.

How we work

Four things we do that software cannot

None of this is fast, and that is the point. A shortlist you can trust takes longer to build than a feed.

  1. 01

    We verify every member

Photographs and identity documents are checked against each other by a person before a profile goes anywhere. Nobody meets a stranger we have not confirmed exists.

  2. 02

    We listen before we match

A qualified counsellor talks through what you actually want — values, family expectations, where you see yourself living — rather than reading it off a form.

  3. 03

    We introduce with context

Introductions arrive one at a time, with the reasoning attached. You are told why we think this person fits, and you decide whether to meet them.

  4. 04

    We stay after the introduction

First meetings can be arranged, families brought together and horoscopes read if you want that. Your counsellor is still there the week after, not only the week before.

Discretion

Nobody finds out unless you tell them

Your profile is never public and is never indexed by search engines. Identity documents are used to confirm you are who you say you are and for nothing else, and your contact details are never handed to another member — introductions run through us until you decide otherwise.

This matters more here than it would elsewhere. Looking for a partner is not something everyone wants their colleagues, their neighbours or their extended family to know about while it is happening, and a service that cannot promise that is not much use.

About Their Experiences

Members write to us when it works. These are their messages, unedited — in Sinhala and Singlish, exactly as they were sent, each linked to the post it came from so you can check it yourself.

  • Emma...

Before you ask

Questions people ask about us

No — Emma is the name of the service, not an individual. Members often write to us as though Emma were one woman, and we would rather say plainly that she is not. Emma Thinking is a team of qualified counsellors, each working with a small number of members at a time, which is why the service feels personal even though it is not one person.

Yes. The counsellors who talk to members and choose introductions hold professional counselling qualifications. That is the difference between this and a dating app: the person deciding who you should meet is trained in having exactly the sort of conversation that decision requires.

Yes. Emma Thinking (Pvt) Ltd is a registered Sri Lankan company based in Colombo. Payments, contracts and refunds all run through the company, and our refund policy is published on this site rather than agreed case by case.

No, unless you tell them. Your profile is never public and is never indexed by search engines, your identity documents are used only to verify you, and your contact details are never shared with another member — introductions run through us until you decide otherwise.

Yes, and a large share of our members do live abroad — in Australia, the UK, Canada, the Gulf and elsewhere. Our counsellors are used to working across time zones, arranging introductions around visits home, and handling the specific question of who would move where, which is usually the first thing that needs settling.

The difference is that nothing here is automated. An app shows you everyone and leaves the judgement to you; we verify every member by hand, and a counsellor chooses a small number of introductions and explains the reasoning behind each one. You meet fewer people, and you know why you are meeting them.
